Matrix II - Gin kyu Nage-no-Kata  Gin Kyu Kumite

This matrix is a balance between precision of throwing kata's and the challenge of pushing your body to the limit.  The top half is the beautiful Nage-no-Kata that was developed by Jigoro Kano the founder of judo.  It is performed in a very precise manner with every step, move, and timing choreographed.  we performed this kata on tatami mats and make the moves very aerial meaning high altitude.  It was bit daunting but brought forth both courage and concentration.  There are five sections with three techniques representing the different classes of throws in judo.  Each time a student performed the technique we would put a tic mark in the box. We can easily track how many times a technique was performed by viewing the tic marks.  We used the four vertical marks and one slanted mark to for every five repetitions.

The bottom matrix was the killer.  The power pad attack involved full-out punches, kicks, strikes, elbows, knees, and headbutts beginning with a minute and building up from there.  A full minute of that intense activity is exhausting.  We are not talking about pacing, we are talking about full-out.  We then brought that forward into freesparing from a distance, then close-in fighting, then throws to grappling.  Each time beginning with a minute and working up to three minutes.  It took many months to get in shape to still have some form while fighting exhausted.  The Grand Finale was nine minutes of continuous fighting without a break with each three minute segment adding a new feature as follows.  Beginning with regular or distance kumite, then adding close-in to the regular at three minutes, then including throws and grappling from six to nine minutes i.e. anything goes during the final three minutes.

Although this was very vigorous training we still took care of each other.  We wore gloves and punched and kicked so as to not injure the other person.  After years of training, a martial artist can gauge force and power in attacks so we can all be there to practice another day.  The culmination of this training was a trophy to each participant who finished the full regimen.
